Of Jaisalmer (The Golden City), in the hot and arid state of Rajasthan, this beautiful 43-way niche would have been utilitarian, perhaps even essential for life when originally carved. Summer temperatures in Rajasthan can soar to over 50°c. Airflow into, through and out of houses there is essential. This piece crucially features trelliswork or fretwork; areas where the stone is pierced all the way through. These holes not only served as places for small oil lamps or candles but vitally, allowed airflow, keeping residents cool in the harsh climate.
The rich golden colour of the limestone is varied, due to natural changes in the composition of the rock as it formed. Accompanying the fretwork is relief work, parts of the stone that are carved without piercing it all the way through. The two expertly carved repeating motifs are of crosses and of flowers, typical of the area. There is a repair to the top right corner which is strong and does not detract from its beauty.
Supplied attached with strong wall hangers.
