This Japanese three drawer chest is made in the negoro lacquer style. It is an original Meiji era tansu chest (1868 - 1912). During the 50's & 60's there was a well-known dealer in Japan who refinished chests with negoro lacquer for the Western market. This would originally have been a merchant's chest or possibly used in a shop. The black painted iron fittings are original.

It would fit perfectly under a desk.
