This charming original three drawer tansu is finished with negoro lacquer and dates to the Meiji era (1868 - 1912). Negoro lacquer is uncommon and during the 50's & 60's there was a well-known dealer in Japan who refinished chests with negoro lacquer for the Western market. This finish of red lacquering Japanese furniture is known as Negoro and originates in the 12^th century AD although this lacquerwork would likely have been carried out during the 50's or 60's during the Showa era.

Light, portable, and sturdy it would originally have been a merchant's chest.
