Description

This 19th-century Chinese elm neck pillow from Shanxi Province is a wonderful example of traditional Chinese craftsmanship, combining simple, practical construction with a beautifully aged rustic character.

Traditionally used in China as an alternative to soft pillows, wooden neck rests supported the head and neck while sleeping. They were particularly popular among women with elaborate hairstyles, helping to preserve carefully arranged hair overnight. Despite their seemingly uncomfortable appearance, their gently curved surfaces were designed to provide support beneath the neck.

Handcrafted from solid elm wood (yumu), this example features a gently concave upper surface, supported by four sturdy, outward-splayed legs joined by simple wooden stretchers. The construction uses traditional Chinese joinery, with visible mortise-and-tenon joints reflecting the practical skills of the original craftsman.

The wood has developed a beautifully weathered patina, with soft grey-brown tones, worn edges and a richly textured surface that speaks of generations of use. Its wonderfully understated form and honest construction give it a timeless appeal.
