    Title

This campaign chest was made in England in the early 19th century for use in British India. It has its original flush brass skeletal handles and is constructed in the traditional way from mahogany wood with brass corners to protect from the rigors of colonial travel.

It bears the mark of Spillman & Co of St Martin’s Lane, a leading furniture producer in London who branded their antique pieces with their ivorine emblem in the early 20th century. See photos.

The original side handles date this chest to 1840 or earlier. After 1840, brass handles with back plates were used. The side handles also date this as an earlier piece as later campaign chests came with a case and did not require carrying handles.

This campaign chest is an excellent example of the style. The chest splits in two to allow for easier storage and handling when traveling. It has been lovingly restored in our Wiltshire workshops.
