This cabinet is a classic example of a Korean ich ung jang, a cabinet used for clothes storage in Korean households. Ich'ung jang were more costly to make and found only in wealthy homes. The bandaji was more commonly used in most Korean homes. The central panels are made from luxurious maple wood and the frame is constructed from pear wood.
Ich'ung jang cabinets would have auspicious motifs. The brass hinges and lockplates are shaped like butterflies. These cabinets separate into two parts. As with almost all Korean pieces, it is finished internally with hanji (later replaced), traditional handmade Korean paper made using the inner bark of the mulberry tree.
Its compact stature makes it perfect for smaller rooms or a study.
