This fine tansu chest is from Japan, dating to the Taishō period (1912–1926). Isho dansu were made flexible use within traditional Japanese homes with storage for clothes and bedding in mind.
This example is beautifully constructed with keyaki (Japanese zelkova) doors and drawers which have a striking bookmatched grain patterns across the sliding doors. The frame is cryptomeria wood. The rich, reddish tone of the wood is complemented by painted black iron fittings, including corner mounts, handles, and circular drawer plates. The lower section features three drawers, while the upper has two sliding doors revealing ample storage within. A fine example of early 20th-century Japanese craftsmanship, blending utility with aesthetic refinement.
