This very decorative leather-covered camphor wood trunk dates from the early part of the 19th century. This style of painted red leather chest was made in Canton for the French export market. This is further illustrated by the French list found inside the lid. Red was a far less commonly used colour. Black or dark green leather trunks were considerably more common.

There has been damage to the back panel which has been sympathetically repaired. This design with the studded swag is typical of the period.

It is likely this chest was made by Ashoe, a well-known furniture maker found in Carpenters Square, Canton. For a similar example see plate 94 in The Decorative Arts of The China Trade by Crossman.
