Chinese Wedding Basket from South China - ca 1920

This beautifully preserved Chinese wedding basket originates from South China and dates to the early 20th century. Traditionally presented during wedding celebrations, baskets such as this were filled with dried fruits, sweets and nuts before being gifted to the bride and groom as symbols of prosperity, abundance and a fruitful marriage. Crafted from wood with an elegant octagonal form, the basket retains its original handle, allowing it to be carried with ease. Every surface is richly decorated with hand-painted and lacquered motifs, while the individual panels are embellished with delicate ink illustrations depicting flowers, scholarly objects and auspicious symbols. Around the lid and base, vibrant geometric borders and floral designs add further depth and character, demonstrating the craftsmanship associated with traditional Chinese decorative arts. Today this charming basket makes a beautiful decorative object in its own right.
