Large Chinese Terracotta Storage Jar Planter – 19th Century

This impressive 19th-century Chinese terracotta vessel was originally crafted as a practical storage jar, designed to hold grain, water, oils, or other household provisions. Its generous scale and beautifully balanced form reflect the enduring simplicity of traditional Chinese pottery, where functionality and craftsmanship were closely intertwined.

Handmade from terracotta and fired to produce a rich charcoal-grey surface, the jar displays subtle tonal variations, weathering, and marks accumulated through decades of use. The softly rounded body, tapering base, and rolled rim create an elegant silhouette that sits comfortably within both traditional and contemporary settings.

Today, this substantial vessel lends itself perfectly to use as a statement planter. Its size makes it ideal for displaying architectural planting schemes, ornamental grasses, olive trees, or small specimen trees, bringing texture, character, and a sense of history to gardens, courtyards, conservatories, and interiors alike.
