This old Japanese woodblock print is by woodblock print artist Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III, 1786-1865). It is the second half of a diptych advertising the play; 'Jiraiya Gôketsu Monogatari' at the Kawarazaki theater. Here, actor Ichikawa Danjuro VIII is seen as Jitsumu Shonin Jiraiya. He looks up at the stars has he holds a compass.

The original publisher was Kogaya Katsugorô and the blockcutter Ôtaya Takichi (Hori Takichi) in 1852, Edo period. The technique is nishiki-e. a technique using multicolour.

These old prints have been reframed by our skilled team in a simple matte black wood frame.

The full diptych can be seen at the Boston Museum of Art.
