This Chinese flower stand dates from the 19th century and is made from red elm (zelkova), known in China as 'jumu' or 'southern elm.' Red elm as the name suggests has a more red tone and has a more aesthetically pleasant grain. It was considered in China to be superior to its northern elm relative. Red elm is the typical wood used in pieces from Jiangsu province. Most flower stands from Jiangsu were lacquered in a burgundy lacquer. Remains of the original lacquer can still be seen in places.
This style of table is also known as a tea table and often came in pairs. A pair of these make ideal bedside tables or lamp tables beside a sofa and are very functional pieces in a small apartment, used behind a sofa or in pairs on each side of a mantelpiece.
This particular piece has a cracked ice shelf at the base, usually a mark of quality.
