This Showa era (1926 - 1989) Japanese tansu chest of drawers is a great and iconic piece of storage. The front is veneered red elm (keyaki wood) with Sendai style iron hardware lock plates and cast iron handles.

The shape of this tansu is unusual and was likely a custom production for a customer. Chests of this type were usually for storing clothes and were called isho dansu. The exterior is lacquered and the interior plain wood. Sendai was well reknowned for producing the best metalwork and the chrysanthemums on the lockplate were the emblem of the Imperial family. They're a symbol of longevity, rejuvenation and royalty.

Despite being a later production from the 20th century, this tansu is undoubtedly of superior craftsmanship to the majority of Western furniture produced in the last 100 years and a work of art in its own right.

This chest is supplied with a working key.
