Japanese Lacquer Table Shelf - Meiji Period (1868–1912)

This Japanese lacquer table shelf dates from the Meiji period and is decorated with exquisite gold maki-e lacquer on a rich black roiro ground. Other than the reverse, each surface is adorned with finely executed floral compositions, inspired by the changing seasons, a popular decorative theme symbolising the beauty and transience of nature in Japanese art.

Originally designed as a kodana (decorative table cabinet), the piece would have been displayed in a reception room or tokonoma alcove, where it would have held treasured objects such as ceramics, incense, or small works of art. The refined proportions, curved upper shelf and delicately painted autumn flowers demonstrate the exceptional craftsmanship that characterised Japanese lacquerware during the Meiji era.

The original sliding front door has been lost over time, leaving the lower compartment open. Rather than detracting from its appeal, this now makes the piece highly practical as a display shelf for ceramics, sculptures or other decorative objects while allowing the beautiful lacquered interior to remain fully visible.
