This Japanese choba dansu merchant chest dates from the Meiji Period (1868 - 1912). It is made in the traditional Osaka style. It’s constructed from a mix of Keyaki, (Red Elm/Zelkova) on the drawers and door fronts, and Hinoki, (Cypress wood )on the front framework. The "box" is made from Sugi, (Cryptomeria).
As with most Japanese furniture, the carpentry is excellent and although it is lightweight, it is extremely well made. It has very functional sliding doors & drawers. All the iron fittings are original to the piece. The top two panels are made of keyaki plywood, which dates it to the end of the Meji period. Modern plywood as we know it was invented in 1797Â Â
