This charming Japanese bronze duck okimono dates to the Meiji era and is a beautifully observed example of late 19th century animal sculpture. Standing alert with its head raised and beak slightly open, the figure captures the elegant posture and character of a waterfowl with remarkable realism and personality. The rich dark patina and finely worked surface detailing give the sculpture exceptional depth and tactile quality.
Cast in bronze using traditional Japanese metalworking techniques, the duck is intricately textured throughout with individually defined feathers, finely detailed feet and subtle naturalistic modelling across the body and neck. The elongated proportions and expressive stance reflect the Meiji period fascination with lifelike decorative art intended for both domestic interiors and export markets.
Animal okimono such as this became highly sought after during the Meiji era, when Japanese bronze artists gained international recognition for their technical mastery and refined craftsmanship. This example makes a striking decorative object, equally suited to display within traditional, eclectic or contemporary interiors.
