This iron bound teak dowry chest has been reduced in depth to create a dramatic console table.

Traditionally, these Pitharas were made with wheels because they were too heavy to lift when loaded with dowry. Painted a rich blue, which has since worn in places creating an iconic finish.
Chests and boxes from India are found in an extraordinary variety of styles reflecting the many cultures that influenced India.
They were usually made from Teak, rosewood or jackfruit wood.
They were used for storing valuables such as textiles, jewellery and cash. Perfect for storage of extra bedding for occasional guests.

Our pieces are mostly from the 19th century & occasionally 18th and early 20th century.
