This beautifully patinated iron-bound chest originates from Gujarat, western India, and dates to the 18th century. Constructed from solid rosewood, it exemplifies the robust craftsmanship and functional elegance associated with Indian travelling and storage chests of this period.
The exterior is reinforced with hand-forged iron straps, corner mounts, and decorative fixings, all of which have developed a rich, dark patina over time. Substantial iron side handles allowed the chest to be carried, while the heavy lid is fitted with an internal chain to prevent it from falling fully open. Inside, the chest reveals a fitted candle box, a traditional feature that speaks to its practical use in an era before widespread lighting.
Strong, understated, and richly aged, this chest would originally have been used for storing valuables, textiles, or personal belongings. Today it works equally well as a decorative storage piece, blanket chest, or low coffee table, bringing warmth and historical character to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
