Description

This 18th-century Indo-Dutch chest from Sri Lanka (formerly Ceylon) is an exceptional example of colonial furniture, combining the rich woodworking traditions of South Asia with the European influences introduced during the Dutch colonial period.

Dating from the mid-18th century, the chest is beautifully constructed from jackfruit wood with contrasting ebony trim and mouldings. Its wonderfully restrained design is brought to life by elaborate brass fittings, including a magnificent pierced and engraved central lockplate decorated with scrolling foliage, surrounded by prominent domed brass studs. Decorative brass carrying handles on either side complete its handsome appearance.

The chest retains its distinctive turned, wooden bun feet, an increasingly uncommon feature as these are often missing from surviving examples. The feet are removable, allowing the chest to be displayed either raised or resting directly on its moulded base. If preferred, the feet can be permanently fixed upon request.

Opening the hinged lid reveals a spacious interior with a small compartment to one side, originally intended for the safekeeping of smaller valuables. The lid is supported by two decorative brass stays.

Furniture of this type reflects the fascinating cultural exchange that developed through the maritime trading networks connecting Sri Lanka, southern India and Europe during the 17th and 18th centuries. The Dutch East India Company played a significant role in this trade, particularly in the highly prized spices and luxury goods of the region. Such chests would have been valued for their strength, practicality and fine craftsmanship, serving as both storage furniture and symbols of wealth and status.

The beautifully aged jackfruit wood has developed a deep, warm patina, contrasting wonderfully with the dark ebony detailing and richly coloured brasswork. The combination of simple architectural lines, intricate metalwork and substantial proportions gives this remarkable antique a timeless appeal.

Today, this striking chest would make an impressive coffee table or centrepiece, while its generous interior offers practical storage for blankets, bedding or other household items. A rare and characterful piece of Indo-Dutch colonial furniture, equally at home in a traditional or contemporary interior.
