Description

This 19th-century carved teak double candlestand from Gujarat, India, has been repurposed from a pair of original architectural pillar capitals, transforming these beautifully sculpted antique elements into a distinctive and decorative candleholder.

Hand-carved from solid teak, the two capitals feature broad circular platforms with deeply carved, fluted borders, supported by substantial architectural bases embellished with stylised foliage and geometric detailing. The capitals are joined by a central wooden section and rest upon a rectangular plinth, creating a balanced  composition. The two metal candle sockets have been fitted to the upper surfaces, giving these historic architectural fragments a new purpose.

Traces of the original painted decoration survive in faded creams, muted greens and earthy browns, contrasting beautifully with the warm tones of the exposed teak. Layers of worn paint, natural surface cracks and a richly weathered patina reflect more than a century of age and use, lending the piece an authentic rustic character. The distressed finish is particularly appealing, highlighting the depth of the carving and the craftsmanship of the original architectural elements.

With its substantial proportions and striking architectural presence, this unusual double candlestand makes a wonderful centrepiece for a dining table, console or mantelpiece.
