This 19th century stick box is from Rajasthan, handcrafted by the tribespeople of Jaisalmer. This example displays a rich, deep patina acquired through generations of use, with its geometric panelled construction, original wrought iron mounts, and raised feet all contributing to its distinctive character. Traditionally used as dowry chests, these boxes were treasured family possessions, passed from one generation to the next and used to store clothing, jewellery, household valuables, and important belongings.
The hinged top opens to reveal a spacious interior, while the robust ironwork and substantial construction reflect the practical needs of desert life. Today, it serves equally well as a coffee table, blanket chest, or statement storage piece, bringing a rare piece of Rajasthan's vernacular craftsmanship into the home.
