Peranakan Ceramic Tile Mirror

This colourful Peranakan ceramic tile mirror has been created using original decorative tiles dating from the 1920s, carefully repurposed and framed in dark wood around a central mirror. The soft blush-pink tiles are decorated with repeating red, blue and white geometric floral motifs, their simple symmetry giving the piece a strong Art Deco character.

The ceramic tiles were originally made in Japan, drawing inspiration from European majolica designs before being exported throughout Singapore and Southeast Asia. Tiles of this type became an important feature of Peranakan architecture, bringing colour and pattern to the façades and interiors of shophouses and family homes.

The tiles used in this mirror were later sourced in India, where they have been carefully repurposed into a unique decorative mirror. Areas of wear, small losses and variations in the glaze have been deliberately retained, preserving the character and history of the original tiles.
