This striking 19th century Indian chakki table is a superb example of traditional village craftsmanship, repurposed today as a versatile and highly decorative piece of furniture. Hand-carved from solid teak, it was originally used as a rice or grain grinding mill in rural Rajasthan or Gujarat. The circular form features bold chip-carved decoration around the edge, showcasing geometric and floral motifs that highlight the artisan's skill.
Chakki tables, known in Hindi as chakki or chukki, were traditionally fitted with quern stones for grinding grain, with a small side opening where the flour would emerge. Today, these iconic tables are often repurposed in the West as unique coffee tables, seats, or even as bases for glass tops. This example, with its rich patina and finely carved details, stands apart from the many modern mango wood reproductions currently on the market, making it a genuine and rare antique piece.
