This traditional Indian 1920’s brass tiffin box, or dabba, is a classic example of the portable lunch containers widely used across India to carry home-cooked meals and snacks. Designed for practicality and durability, tiffin carriers such as this were commonly used by workers and travellers to transport food between home and workplace.

The container is made from brass and consists of three separate stackable compartments secured within a sturdy brass wire frame with a hinged locking handle. This clever design allows multiple dishes to be carried together while keeping them neatly separated. The simple cylindrical forms and functional metal frame give the piece a pleasingly utilitarian aesthetic, while the warm patina of the brass reflects years of use.

Today, these traditional tiffin boxes are often appreciated not only as functional objects but also as decorative pieces. They can be used for serving food, storing jewellery or small objects, or displayed as a charming reminder of everyday life in India.
