Green Yaobian Glaze Miniature Vase

This striking vase is decorated with a wonderfully rich green copper yaobian glaze, combining layers of turquoise, teal and deep blue with flashes of warm reddish-brown. A fine network of crackling runs across the surface, while subtle mottling and variations in the glaze give the vase remarkable depth and texture.

Yaobian, meaning “kiln transformation”, describes the unpredictable changes that occur during firing as the glaze responds to variations in temperature and kiln atmosphere. These reactions create the distinctive flowing colours and surface effects, meaning that no two pieces are exactly alike.

Handmade in Jingdezhen, China’s celebrated centre of porcelain production for over a thousand years, this vase continues the tradition of experimenting with expressive and richly coloured glazes for which Chinese ceramics have long been admired.
