These authentic 19th-century dog gates originate from Gujarat, India, where they were traditionally installed in front of the main entrance doors of Gujarati havelis. Designed to prevent animals from entering the household while still allowing airflow and visibility, such gates formed an important yet often overlooked element of traditional Indian domestic architecture.

Constructed from solid teak with hand-forged iron bars, this pair retains a beautifully aged green-painted finish that has worn naturally over generations, revealing layers of colour and timber beneath. The simple architectural form is enhanced by decorative pierced panels along the upper section, featuring traditional geometric cutwork that provides visual interest while maintaining the practical functionality of the gate. The contrast between the weathered green paint and the dark iron bars creates a striking rustic character that suits both traditional and contemporary settings.

Today, antique dog gates are prized as unusual architectural pieces and can be repurposed in a variety of ways. They make distinctive garden gates, decorative room dividers, wall-mounted artworks, or statement architectural features, bringing a sense of history and craftsmanship to both indoor and outdoor spaces.
