This exceptional 18th century teak chest from Gujarat is a remarkable survivor, retaining its original iron straps, hand-forged lock plates and an extraordinary layer of worn green paint that has developed a beautiful, naturally aged patina over centuries of use. Built to withstand constant travel and heavy loads, the chest remains mounted on its original wooden wheels, which still turn freely today.
The substantial iron binding not only strengthened the chest but also protected it during transportation, suggesting it was once used to carry valuable household possessions or trade goods. The simple forged side handles made it easier to manoeuvre, while the decorative hand-cut lock plate reflects the craftsmanship lavished on even practical objects during the period.
Inside, the chest offers generous storage beneath its original hinged lid, complete with a chain support and robust iron hinges. Every surface tells the story of its working life, with layers of paint worn smooth through handling and use. Today it makes an exceptional coffee table, blanket chest or statement storage piece, bringing authentic 18th century Indian character to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
