Description

This 19th-century glazed teak book cabinet from Gujarat, India, is a wonderful example of Anglo-Indian furniture, combining traditional Indian craftsmanship with the architectural lines of European Regency-inspired design.

Constructed from solid teak, the cabinet features a pair of tall glazed doors, each divided into twelve rectangular panes by slender wooden glazing bars. The doors are fitted with decorative metal handles and a central fastening, while the gently projecting moulded cornice and shaped plinth give the cabinet a pleasing sense of proportion and understated elegance.

Inside, five substantial wooden shelves provide generous storage and display space for books, ceramics, glassware or treasured collections. The glazed doors allow the contents to remain visible while helping to protect them from dust.

The teak has developed a rich, warm patina, with attractive variations in colour and grain that reflect the cabinet's age and history. Its restrained decoration and practical design are characteristic of furniture produced in India during the colonial period, when European styles were adapted by skilled local craftsmen.

Originally intended for use in a private residence, office or library, this handsome antique cabinet would make a wonderful addition to a sitting room, study or dining room.
