A rare find these days, this antique 19th century Indian pen box has its original vermillion paint and depicts Ganesh at the Feast of Kubera.

Kubera was the Hindu god of wealth and held a feast for the Hindu pantheon of gods. Shiva refused to attend and sent his elephant headed son Ganesh instead. His appetite was insatiable and Kubera was left embarrassed and humbled. Kubera ran to Shiva & Parvarti who advised him of the lesson in humility he was being taught by Ganesh. Kubera was presented with three grains of rice by Parvarti to give to Ganesh. Ganesh's hunger was abated and Kubera learned a bitter lesson.

The painting style is of the Nagaur school, a city in Northern Rajasthan.
