Framed Painted Indian Horoscope From Rajasthan - Ca 1920's

This striking framed Indian horoscope painting from Rajasthan dates to the early 20th century, circa 1920s, and offers a fascinating glimpse into the visual language of traditional astrology. Hand-painted on paper, the composition is structured around a bold yellow astrological grid, overlaid with handwritten Devanagari script and symbolic markings that reflect calculations of cosmic influence and destiny.

Unlike more formalised chart paintings, this piece is animated by a series of sinuous serpents that weave dynamically across the surface. In Hindu symbolism, serpents are often associated with cosmic energy, protection, and cyclical time, lending the work a powerful symbolic presence. The contrast between the regimented grid and the fluid movement of the snakes creates a compelling tension between order and the unpredictable forces of fate.

Executed in natural pigments and preserved within a simple wooden frame, the painting retains its original, slightly weathered surface with visible folds, annotations, and age marks that enhance its authenticity. Both a cultural artefact and a visually engaging piece, it reflects Rajasthan’s enduring tradition of astrological manuscript painting.
