Framed Horoscope Painting - Ca 1920

This hand-painted Indian horoscope painting originates from Rajasthan and dates to the early 20th century, around the 1920s. Traditionally created by astrologers and temple scribes, such artworks combine sacred imagery with handwritten astrological script, reflecting the deep cultural importance of astrology within Hindu life.

The composition features a beautifully painted celestial face surrounded by a traditional astrological chart, with a radiant sun deity depicted beneath. The upper section contains a geometric kundli (horoscope) diagram, divided into compartments containing handwritten Devanagari characters and astrological symbols. Below, the sun is personified with an expressive human face surrounded by pointed rays, representing Surya, the Hindu solar deity associated with vitality, light and the passage of time.

Presented in its characterful gold-toned wooden frame, with a naturally aged surface and signs of historic wear, this unusual painting offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditions of Indian astrology.
