Farmhouse Coffee Table from Henan – 19th Century

This substantial rustic farmhouse table was originally used for everyday family meals. Its low height reflects the traditional style of dining in rural China, where families gathered around low tables whilst seated on stools or benches. 

Constructed from elm with willow timbers incorporated into the top, the table has developed a wonderfully mellow patina through generations of daily use. The thick plank top is framed by traditional mitred breadboard ends, while exposed mortise-and-tenon joints celebrate the craftsmanship of its original makers. Every surface bears the marks of a hardworking life, from the softly worn edges to the rich texture of the aged timber.

Today, its generous size make it an exceptional coffee table, equally suited to a relaxed living space or as a striking centrepiece in a contemporary interior. Honest, robust and beautifully understated, it is a fine example of Chinese provincial furniture that combines practicality with enduring character.
