These antique Chinese chairs were known as officials hat chairs because the shape of the back was reminiscent of an officials hat. They were often made in pairs for a husband and wife.

They are usually made from elm or red elm, but examples made in walnut is also found in North China. This particular chair was originally lacquered with a burgundy lacquer which has since mostly worn away.

They were made in pairs and it is very rare to find larger sets however an attractive harlequin set can be made from different pairs.

Hat chairs were usually placed each side of a wine or tea table and can be seen depicted in ancestor portraits and Chinese pith painting scenes.
