Catalpa Sideboard From Tianjin - 19th Century

This 19th century sideboard comes from Tianjin, the historic port city of Northern China, where elegant furniture of this form was produced for both wealthy homes and official residences. Its restrained, architectural design reflects the enduring influence of Ming dynasty furniture, celebrated for its balanced proportions, clean lines and emphasis on the natural beauty of the timber.

Crafted from richly figured catalpa wood, this sideboard has developed a superb warm patina over more than a century of use. The striking grain patterns are beautifully complemented by the original brass hardware, including the large circular locking plate, hinges and traditional drawer handles, all of which remain full of character.

The layout offers exceptional practicality, with three full-width drawers above, two smaller drawers flanking the cupboard, and a generously proportioned storage compartment concealed behind the twin doors. The original removable locking bar is still present.

Highly functional, this antique Tianjin sideboard works equally well as a dining room sideboard, hallway cabinet or living room storage piece.
