This charming late 19th-century Dhokra fish money box originates from Chhattisgarh in central India, a region celebrated for its distinctive tribal metalwork and traditional lost-wax casting techniques.

The fish features an intricately worked open lattice body, contrasting with its solid, finely detailed head, tapering tail and broad fins. A small hinged opening beneath the body allows coins to be deposited and retrieved, while the attached metal chain adds another interesting detail. The aged brass surface has developed a wonderfully rich, dark patina, with golden highlights accentuating the raised decoration.

Dhokra is an ancient Indian metal-casting tradition that uses the lost-wax technique, also known as cire perdue. The process begins with a model formed from beeswax, often mixed with oil or resin, onto which the finer decorative details are applied. The model is then coated with layers of fine clay, traditionally incorporating clay from termite mounds, to create a mould. Once dried and fired, the wax melts away, leaving a hollow cavity into which molten brass or bronze is poured. After cooling, the clay mould is broken away to reveal the finished casting, which is then cleaned and refined by hand.

As each mould is destroyed during the casting process, every Dhokra piece is individually made. This delightful fish money box is a wonderful example of the ingenuity and artistry of India's traditional metalworkers, equally appealing as a small collectible sculpture or an unusual decorative object.
