Chinese Wedding Basket from South China - ca 1920

This beautifully decorated antique Chinese wedding basket originates from South China and dates to the early 20th century. Traditionally used during wedding celebrations, baskets such as this were filled with dried fruits, sweets and nuts and presented to the bride and groom as symbols of prosperity, abundance and good fortune.

The distinctive hexagonal basket is finished in black lacquer with gilt painted floral and bamboo decoration. Its raised lid is particularly attractive, with carved and gilded bamboo motifs and a striking blue glass finial. Brass carrying handles complete the design.

The lacquer has mellowed beautifully over time, with areas of wear revealing the warm timber beneath and giving the piece a rich, characterful patina. Both decorative and practical, it would make an unusual storage piece for keepsakes and treasured possessions.
