This refined 19th century sideboard originates from the port city of Tianjin in Northern China and is crafted from richly grained camphor wood (樟木, zhāng mù). Tianjin furniture is celebrated for its restrained elegance and practical ingenuity, and this piece is a fine example of a form whose simple, architectural design can be traced back to the Ming dynasty.
Rather than using conventional hinged doors, the cabinet employs a traditional removable panel system. The central front panel lifts away to allow the release of the two flanking panels, revealing a generous interior storage space. This clever construction not only lends the piece its distinctive appearance but also reflects the practical, durable solutions favoured in northern Chinese domestic furniture.
Above the main compartment are three drawers fitted with understated brass plate pulls, offering additional organised storage. The warm honeyed tones of the camphor wood are enhanced by a beautifully aged surface, with subtle marks, wear, and variations in grain that speak to its age and long use. The whole is raised on shaped feet, giving the sideboard a grounded yet elegant presence.
