Spring Bench From Shanxi - 1900

These elegant 19th-century Chinese “spring benches” from Shanxi Province are charming examples of traditional vernacular seating. Once commonly placed outside shops and small restaurants, they offered a place for both staff and customers to sit, rest and enjoy the fresh air — forming part of everyday street life in northern China.

Constructed from solid elm, each bench features beautifully carved cloud motifs to the shaped brackets beneath the seat, a decorative detail that softens the otherwise simple, functional form. The rich, dark patina and worn seat surface reflect decades of use, giving the timber depth and character that only time can create. The legs are splayed, as is typical of this regional style, providing both stability and a distinctive silhouette.

Versatile and full of rustic charm, these benches work equally well in a hallway, at the end of a bed, or as occasional seating in a living space. Two are available in this style.
