This lovely antique Chinese gouache painting is of a Chinese Junk Ship from Canton. Painted on pith paper and dating from the 19th century, they were made for the European market which enjoyed a fascination with all things Chinese and Chinoiserie from the Georgian period onwards.

Junk Ships are trading vessels with fully battened sails. They have been an iconic sight on Chinese waterways since at least 200AD and the Eastern Han Dynasty.

Pith paper is made from the spongy cellular tissue in the stem of a small tree called Tetrapanax Papyrifera, native to south-west China. Pith is incredibly fragile.

This old Chinese gouache painting has been reframed by our skilled team in a simple gilt frame.

Frame Size 43 x 1.75 x 34 (wxdxh cms)
Painting Dimensions: 25 x 16.5 (wxh cms)

Note some damage to pith paper on right hand side.
