Officials Hat Chair Armchair - Walnut & Elm Circa 1820 - with very nice patina.
These chairs were known as officials hat chairs because the shape of the back was reminiscent of an officials hat
They are usually made from elm or red elm, but walnut is also found in North China.
They were made in pairs and it is very rare to find larger sets.
However an attractive harlequin set can be made from different pairs.
Hat chairs were usually placed each side of a wine or tea table.
Both Ming and Qing furniture had a strong influence on English furniture, notably through Chippendale in the 18th century.
