This beautifully patinaed elm Shandong kang cabinet dates to the 19th century and reflects the elegant simplicity characteristic of northern Chinese furniture design. Originating in Shandong Province, this form developed during the Ming dynasty and remained popular for centuries due to its balanced proportions and practical functionality.

Made to sit beside the heated kang platform found in prosperous northern homes, these long low cabinets served as both storage pieces and decorative elements within the room. The cabinet offers a large interior compartment behind a pair of paneled doors, complemented by two upper drawers that provide additional organisation. The rich grain patterns of the elm are enhanced by a warm, even patina developed over generations of use.

The piece retains its brass locking plates and ring handles, which add subtle contrast and complete its classic, restrained aesthetic. Today, the clean lines and generous width of kang cabinets make them particularly well suited for modern interiors—ideal as media units, low sideboards, or elegant storage consoles.
