Qing Dynasty Guan Yu Figure - Early 19th Century

    M757

    £625

This striking gilt polychrome Chinese figure is Guan Yu, a warrior deity and a real figure who lived during the Later Eastern Han dynasty (25–220AD). The figure dates to the Qing dynasty (1644–1911), probably the first half of the 19th century. He is worshipped in Buddhism, Confucianism & Taoism as a guardian and protector. He is also the patron of merchants and scholars.

Guan Yu, also known as Yunchang & Guandi (Lord Guan) served under the famous warlord Liu Bei. Here, his beard is made with real horse hair. His right hand is raised in tarjani mudra a gesture of vigilance. There is a compartment in his back as is common with ancestor figures which would have held offerings such as paper money or herbs.

In Taoism, ancestor worship was an integral part of Chinese culture for many centuries. It played an important role in each family's clan life. Ancestor figures were cherished and honoured daily with an offering of incense. This was believed to protect the home and family members.

It is a unique piece of art and a wonderful addition to a collection.
