This striking Chinese figure is Guan Yu, a warrior deity and a real figure who lived during the Later Eastern Han dynasty (25€“220AD). The figure dates to the Qing dynasty (1644€“1911), probably the 19th century. He is worshipped in Buddhism, Confucianism & Taoism as a guardian and protector. He is also the patron of merchants and scholars.

Guan Yu, also known as Yunchang & Guandi (Lord Guan) served under the famous warlord Liu Bei. There is a compartment in his back as is common with ancestor figures which would have held offerings such as paper money or herbs.

In Taoism, ancestor worship was an integral part of Chinese culture for many centuries. It played an important role in each family's clan life. Ancestor figures were cherished and honoured daily with an offering of incense. This was believed to protect the home and family members.

It is a unique piece of art and a wonderful addition to a collection.
