Description

This green yaobian glaze vase is handmade in Jingdezhen, China, using traditional ceramic techniques. Its broad, rounded form gives the vase a sculptural quality.

The vase is finished in a richly textured green copper yaobian glaze, with layers of turquoise, teal and deeper blue interspersed with warm reddish-brown tones. Fine crackling, mottling and natural variations across the surface give the glaze.

Yaobian, meaning "kiln transformation", refers to the unpredictable changes that occur during firing as the glaze reacts to variations in heat and atmosphere within the kiln. These effects cannot be completely controlled, so each vase develops its own individual combination of colour, markings and texture. No two pieces are exactly alike.

All our reproduction Chinese porcelain is made in Jingdezhen, one of China's most important centres of ceramic production for over a thousand years. The city became particularly renowned for its imperial kilns during the Ming and Qing dynasties, and its long tradition of specialist ceramic craftsmanship continues today.
