Chinese Wedding Basket from South China - ca 1920

This beautifully decorated antique Chinese wedding basket originates from South China and dates to the early 20th century. Traditionally presented during wedding celebrations, baskets such as this were filled with dried fruits, sweets and nuts before being gifted to the bride and groom as symbols of prosperity, abundance and good fortune for their future together.

Handcrafted from bentwood, the basket has an elegant rounded form with a fitted lid surmounted by a finely carved knop and a woven swing handle for carrying. The rich black lacquer ground is beautifully painted with vibrant floral sprays and pairs of songbirds, traditional motifs in Chinese decorative art representing happiness, harmony and marital bliss. A geometric key fret border around the foot and floral garlands encircling the lid provide further decorative detail, while twisted applied bands emphasise the vessel's graceful profile.

The warm lacquer has mellowed beautifully over time, developing the rich patina and gentle wear expected of an object that has been treasured for over a century.
