This elegant black lacquer console table comes from Shanxi province and dates to the late 19th century. Constructed from elm (yumu 榆木), it retains its original lacquer finish, which has developed a rich patina through age and use. The four drawers provide practical storage while maintaining the table's clean, refined proportions.

Made in the provincial style, this piece would originally have been used in a household as an altar table. An ancestor portrait would be hung above, with joss sticks lit and placed upon the surface in daily rituals for family well-being. Today, its narrow form makes it an ideal choice for a hallway, behind a sofa, or in a dining space where both elegance and practicality are needed.
