These carved tribal chairs are from Nagaland, North East India. These chairs would have been used by the tribal leaders and elders and are carved from one piece of wood from the hollock tree (terminalia myriocarpa) also known as the East Indian almond tree. It dates to the 1930's and has a beautiful patina.

Nagaland is a relatively inaccessible and unexplored area of India which borders with Myanmar. The people live in villages set throughout the jungle and until the introduction of Christianity in the 1960's, the people of Nagaland were headhunters, regularly going to war with other nearby villages.
