This beautifully hand-carved wooden masala box originates from Rajasthan in northern India and dates to the 19th century. Crafted from dark hardwood, it features two interior compartments revealed by a traditional swivelling lid. The box is crowned with a sculptural horse finial — a symbol of strength and vitality — and decorated with carved circular flower motifs on each lid section.

Used daily in Indian households, spice boxes (masala dani) were essential for storing spice mixtures central to Indian cooking. This example reflects how everyday objects in India were imbued with artistic and spiritual expression, transforming a utilitarian item into a work of folk craftsmanship.
