This beautifully hand-carved tika box originates from the Banswara tribal region of Rajasthan and dates to around 1900. Expertly shaped from a single block of teak wood, it was traditionally used to hold kumkum—the sacred red powder applied to the forehead as a tika or bindi in Hindu ritual practice.

The surface is decorated with incised lotus and star motifs, symbols of purity and spiritual awakening. Rising from the centre is a stylised horse finial, representing strength, endurance, and divine protection. Over a century of use has given the teak a rich patina and softened edges, enhancing its rustic beauty and individuality. These tactile tribal boxes make a wonderful collector’s piece or a decorative addition to any interior.
