This beautifully timeworn carved teak Nandi bull dates to the 19th century and originates from Andhra Pradesh in Southern India. Nandi, the bull, is the sacred mount and devoted companion of Lord Shiva, embodying purity, loyalty, and strength. Figures such as this were often placed in small household shrines or temples, where offerings and prayers were made to seek Shiva’s blessings.

Carved from a single block of dense teak, this early example has an especially archaic form with deeply incised detailing along the body and headdress. The softened contours and rich patina are the result of age and devotional handling over generations. A rare and evocative survivor of South Indian folk art — full of spiritual presence and sculptural character.
